SIMTO® M-Blend for Naphtha Feedstock Blending

A plant, whether it is a refinery, a petrochemical complex, or a fertilizer producer, needs to process the right feedstocks to produce the optimal yields of desired products. One of the important feedstocks is naphtha. It is usually a blend of various naphtha streams from light and heavy naphtha from the crude unit to naphtha from cokers, visbreakers, hydrocrackers, and hydrotreaters. Fluctuations in qualities and quantities of these streams and different feedstock specifications make optimal naphtha blending a challenge for the plant. SIMTO M-Blend for Naphtha Blending helps a plant to make optimal naphtha blends and manage the complexity of multiple blend stocks and specifications. Key features of the application are:
  • Minimizing cost and quality giveaway of multiple blends over multiple periods in the schedule horizon, while honoring constraints in specifications, materials, logistics, and processing unit schedules.
  • Avoiding the problem of optimizing a single blend at the risk of inventory shortage and unit shutdown or slowdown for subsequent blends.
  • Controlling critical properties close to the optimal targets to improve product yields for processing units. For example, a reformer needs high aromatic naphtha, but a steam cracker to produce ethylene or a steam reformer to produce fertilizer needs low aromatic naphtha. Specific aromatic targets depend on the processing units.
  • Controlling other secondary properties for better yields or longer catalyst life. For example, a greater n-paraffin/iso-paraffin ratio gives better ethylene yield; low sulfur contents prolong the Ni-catalyst life in steam reformers; low olefin contents reduce coking in preheaters.
  • Predicting blend properties accurately with versatile blending methods including linear blending, bonuses, formulas, interactions, and dynamic libraries.
  • Blending the naphtha feed consistently for stable operation and consistent product quality.
  • Managing inventory economically by accurately predicting demands of blend stocks.
  • Increasing plant flexibility with the ability to adapt quickly to changes in quantities and qualities of naphtha streams.
  • Managing blend specifications and blending methods through a blend knowledge base.
M-Blend for Naphtha Blending has user-friendly interfaces to interact with the program and tabular displays and trend charts to present simulation results. These features make the comprehensive functions of the application accessible. M-Blend can be used stand-alone or integrated with SIMTO Scheduling to optimize feedstock and product blending.
